One of my favorite recent thrillers is 'The Ghost Writer' by Roman Polanski. It's a tense political thriller with an excellent cast and masterful story telling. The scene I wrote new music for is a chase, with mounting tension, as Ewan McGregor's character is coming closer to the truth. - M J

::: Entry VII : STRANGE LAND :::
In April 2009, I had the good fortune of scoring an excellent sci-fi animation. 'Strange Land' is a computer animated short created by the brilliant minds of Andrew Jerez and Harry Teitelman. It mirrors the best qualities of the renowned 'Pixar Shorts', with an ever-present darker twist.

::: Entry VI : Rescoring 'In the Mood for Love' :::
Is it a coincidence that most critically acclaimed films also have iconic musical scores? 'In the Mood for Love' (2000) is an ideal example. Wong Kar-wai employs Michael Galasso's music to great effect in evoking romantic longing, between Mo-wan and Li-zhen. In rescoring this montage, I paid my respects to Galasso's score, and hopefully created music that works equally well.

::: Entry V : Rescoring 'DragonAge' TV Spot :::
This clip is short and sweet; a tv spot for the video game, Dragon Age: Origins. The commercial provided an opportunity to write visceral orchestral music, which I couldn't pass up. Enjoy. - M J

::: Entry IV : Cannes Premiere :::
Cannes Film Festival has officially accepted 'The Return Address' into their prestigious lineup. This unique short film was directed by Abi Varghese, under the production of Infamous Coconuts.
Below is a sample from my score for 'The Return Address'.
Abi and I met in late March, he was looking for a soundtrack in the style of Yann Tiersen (Amelie, 2001) and Thomas Newman (American Beauty, 1999). The film was close to final cut, and music was to play a pivotal role in the narrative.
The story is set in 1955, and revolves around a young photographer in a small town. Through small acts of quirky kindness he begins to positively change people's lives. For more info : 'The Return Address'

::: Entry III : Rescoring 'Dracula' :::
Francis Ford Coppola's 'Dracula' (1992) has long been one of my cinematic guilty pleasures. One of the many reasons I enjoy it so much is Wojciech Kilar's brilliant score. When I rescore any film, I always approach the original work with appreciation and respect. Often times, the challenge of creating new music for a brilliant film provides it's own inspiration. - M J

::: Entry II : Rescoring 'Serenity' :::
This clip is from a film called 'Serenity' (2005), directed by Joss Whedon. It holds a special place in my heart as one of the first cues I ever rescored. The music was performed by an orchestra of professional musicians at the ASCAP Film Scoring Workshop (2008), conducted and composed by yours truly. - M J
